I was truly devastated that none of them hatched! After I got over my disappointment, I began to brainstorm reasons as to why they didn't hatch. I explained to my students that this is part of science. As Einstein said," I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." We discussed what we know and came up with several things we will do differently on our next trial.
There was mold growing in the incubator:
-we will incubate somewhere else in the school
-we will buy an hygrometer to go in the incubator
The eggs were free range, so
-we will use eggs that are no more than 2 days old to ensure they are fresh and thus have a greater chance of hatching
Egg Selection / last time we used eggs with high and moderate hatch-ability:
-we will use only eggs with high hatch- ability
Egg Placement: last time we put the eggs in the egg turner but aren't certain they were all placed point side down:
-all eggs will go point side down in the egg turner
