In 4th grade, we have been talking about aerospace engineers and what their jobs entail. Students have discussed various aspects of each planet, and designed a spacecraft to visit a planet of their choice. They had to act as an aerospace engineer. They had to take into consideration at least 3 aspects they discovered about their planet when designing their own spacecraft. From there we went on to design parachutes. These parachutes had to fit (by the end of this unit) on their spacecraft and had a mission of their own. To have a successful parachute, they had to determine what material, length of suspension lines, and a canopy size that would be best to land on a planet with an atmosphere thinner than Earth's; with a minimum drop speed of 5 feet per second.
Since we had already talked about gravity in the unit above....we decided to continue by determining how gravity effects us here on Earth. We used Issac Newton's 3 laws of Motion to investigate his laws in relation to simple machines. Student's created various lego creations and identifying the simple machines present in their creation. Over the past couple of weeks 5th grade has been working on designing electrical alarm circuits. We have discussed parallel and series circuits. Students are using this knowledge to create a mobile device that uses a battery, motor, wire, and a switch. They were given supplies from my room to construct their mobile device, but they were told they could bring in extra supplies if they so choose. They have loved doing this!
We are off and running! Specials will done a little differently this year. I will see each class 6 weeks at a time, with one day a week being their PE day. I look forward to getting to know your kids! By seeing your child consecutively, I will be able to do more in-depth lessons and activities. Monday:
Walk-A-Thon - wear tennis shoes Guest Speaker-Dr. Causey Orthodontics Tuesday: Guest Speaker: EMC - electricity and Engineer - robots Wednesday: Atlanta Fieldtrip Don't forget extra spending money and a snack for the trip. Be at school at 6:15. We plan to be back at school at 5:30. I have sent home information about this trip home! Thursday: Work on Robots Friday: Guest Speaker: Hydopoics Work on Robots Conduct Reward-wear PJ, junk food, and electronics Robots: I am working on getting some high school students to come over and show us the robots they have made. After we see and play with their bots. I would like for us to make our own. I have found one that is do able for our students but I am going to need sup pies. If you have or are willing donate the following, please let me know! =) Needed:

Tuesday 4/21 4th grade ELA in the afternoon Wednesday 4/22 4th grade Writing in the afternoon Thursday 4/23 4th grade Math in the afternoon Tuesday 4/28 4th grade Science in the morning Thursday 4/30 4th grade Social Studies in the morning EOG Assessment Guide I hope you all had a wonderfully relaxing Spring Break! As we come back this week, we will be preparing for EOG testing known as Georgia Milestones. Students will be testing April 21, 22, 23, 28, and 30. This test will be taken by computer. We will practice using the state's software a couple of times before the actual testing dates. This will allow students to get familiar with the tools it provides.
This week we will be reviewing math and science we have learned this year and some of it will be in test format. DO NOT STRESS! This is for your child to practice only! This week I will be sending home Math Projects to give your child practice at thinking critically. On the GA Milestones test, your child will have to explain how they got their answer. There are not suppose to be many of these but your child needs to be able to think beyond just the answer. He or she needs to be able to "explain" how did you get that answer......and what does that answer mean? We will be going over these in class the following day. Monday
